Amazon.co.uk Review
The highest grossing film in Japanese box-office history, Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away (Sen To Chihiro Kamikakushi) is a dazzling film that reasserts the power of drawn animation to create fantasy worlds. Like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz and Lewis Carroll's Alice, Chihiro plunges into an alternate reality. On the way to their new home, the petulant adolescent and her parents find what they think is a deserted amusement park. Her parents stuff themselves until they turn into pigs, and Chihiro discovers they're trapped in a resort for traditional Japanese gods and spirits. An oddly familiar boy named Haku instructs Chihiro to request a job from Yubaba, the greedy witch who rules the spa. As she works, Chihiro's untapped qualities keep her from being corrupted by the greed that pervades Yubaba's mini-empire. In a series of fantastic adventures, she purges a river god suffering from human pollution, rescues the mysterious No-Face, and befriends Yubaba's kindly twin, Zeniba. The resolve, bravery and love Chihiro discovers within herself enable her to aid Haku and save her parents. The result is a moving and magical journey, told with consummate skill by one of the masters of contemporary animation. --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars The Pinnacle of 2D Animation.   July 26, 2010
Dante&Randal
Spirited Away is the kind of film that shines through not because of it's technical achievements, but it's story. And this is all down to the fact that Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli are masters at storytelling, with their only rival in that area being Pixar, and until Toy Story 3, was in my opinion the best animated film I had ever seen. But because Spirited Away is a traditional animated film in the sense that it is 2D, it therefore belongs as the pinnacle of 2D animation. There are however, moments where this film exceeds many of Pixar's own films, in that each and every notable character in this movie is life-like in everythng other than appearance. They all have good and bad qualities in them, just like real people do. This is especially relevant for the lead charcater Chihiro, who in the film, has been transported to an alternate reality and her parents have been taken away from her. So in order to return home with her parents she must work in a bath house which is uder the control of the witch Yubaba, the one who took her parents away.
The story is very Alice-in-Wonderland-esque, but is so much more than that. It is very easy to forget that this film is animated, as you really care for the characters, especially Chihiro, in a way that I have only experienced, other than in this film, in Toy Story 3. It is without a doubt the best anime movie I have ever seen, and is the running for one of the best animated movies of all time. It's a difficult film to describe without giving away spoilers, but in short, the animation is brilliant, the characters are realistic, the story is fantastic and for a dub the voice acting is very good (although I recommend watching it in both english and japanese, both of which are on this DVD). Spirtied Away is the benchmark all animated films should aim to be. 5/5

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Studio Ghibli film   July 16, 2010
A. J. HAWKEN (London - UK)
This is an excellent film, but my purpose is to point out that this film, like many others directed by Hayou Miyazaki was produced by the Studio Ghibli, not Optimum Home Entertainment as suggested by Amazon. I believe Optimum is the DVD distributor - they had nothing to do with creating the film. I have tried to update the Amazon info but it was not accepted by Amazon. If they could be bothered to read the top of the image supplied they would see that the film is created by the studio Ghibli.

5 out of 5 stars Triumph of Animation and Story   July 12, 2010

I'm not going to delve into the deep nuances of the plot or or every frame of animation but there is one thing I'm going to do and that is say buy it! This is Ghiblis' finest and that's surely enough of a reccomendation!

5 out of 5 stars the strangest, and yet most beautiful animation ever   June 25, 2010
Stella Hofer (Llanddeusant, Wales)
If there's one film that stands beside the box office hit, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, which helped launch Studio Ghibli, it's got to be Spirited Away. I do enjoy some Disney films, but not all are as realistic and familiar as the world that we know, and Spirited Away reflects so much more to do with how we live our lives, not necessarily humans, but animals and ghosts as well. The mayhem and troubles which affect the main character, a ten year old girl named Chihiro, as she battles to save her parents from a magical transformation into pigs by working in a bath house situated in what they first take to be a theme park, but is in fact a land of fantasy and ghosts is just so easy to understand and sympathise with. She meets very odd looking creatures, an evil witch, her kind sister Zeniba, a monstrous, but lonely spirit which roams alone by the name of No-Face and a friendly, strangely familiar spirit boy called Haku who aids Chihiro in her task to remember her name and do what she can to go back home with her parents as soon as they are safe. Her tasks are often too forceful for a ten year old to cope with, but because she does what she is told by Yubaba, she's not so disgusted by a stink spirit that she wants to run away. She also begins to understand the value of independence, and decides to make her own decisions, like when she shakes her head in answer to the offer of money from No-Face and when she makes an unfamiliar journey to Zeniba's house. This is the best animated film I've ever seen which teaches you so much about life and how you can decide to live as you wish, as well as the responsibility a child must soon take as they grow up to be their own person, and later begin to care about their family on a more emotional level than they would when they're younger. It's so easy to comprehend how Chihiro feels, she's bored with her mother and father, she hates them for changing their minds about a quick look at the Land of the Spirits and is able to do certain things no child would normally have to do, which is to get a job and stick to it. What more can I say? It's a joy to watch, if there's any violence it's No-Face who's the culprit more than Yubaba or her big baby, and anyway, he's told to watch it, grow up and start behaving.
