Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
When the standard lightbulb was invented, naturally, we applauded. But science means progress - and the world is now looking for alternative ways to light up our homes. This is one of the best we've found. Inside the Sun Jar is a highly efficient solar cell, a rechargeable battery and three low energy LED lamps. When the jar is placed in direct sunlight, the solar cell creates an electrical current that charges the battery over a few hours. When it gets dark or lights are turned off, this energy powers the three natural-coloured LED lamps inside the jar. The frosted glass of the jar then diffuses the light, giving the appearance of trapped sunlight.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised   July 14, 2010
Mr. Micael J. Clements
After reading through a lot of honest reviews on this product I was concerned it would not live up to expectation. So after the first night I followed one of the reviews and undid the top leaving the panel exposed in direct sun light for 6 hours or so. I'm fortunate enough to live in Cyprus so its always bright and sunny. After two weeks the sun jar is the same brightness and lights our daughters room with a warm tea light glow. We're on about buying family one just to see how they do perform in the UK.

4 out of 5 stars Works for me!   July 7, 2010
A. Thornton (London, UK.)
Reading the other reviews and people complaining about what little power they're getting, I am wondering how many people read the instruction properly and leave their sun jar in direct sunlight to charge, or do they merely leave it in daylight (which is insufficient). Mine works fine and I like having it on during those cosy nights. But don't expect enough light to illuminate your room. It's a dim glow, so the sun jar is to be used as a feature rather than a proper source of light. It also doesn't come on when there is other light around. Something which I think is a strength of the product.

It would be perfect for children who need a little bit of light in their bedroom with which to go to sleep, but not too much to disturb their circadian rhythm. Put the sun jar on the floor by their bedroom door and it will be a comfort so they know where the door is, in case they need to make a dash for it to escape the monster under the bed.

3 out of 5 stars Lovely idea but poor quality   June 20, 2010
Mrs. M. Stibbards (Cambridgeshire, UK)
Sun in a jar - how lovely is that? My daughter had one sent to her as a gift via Amazon and its gorgeous. Well the 2nd one as the 1st one arrived damaged.
Its not a bright light but a lovely yellow glow at night as she goes to sleep.
I loved it so much that I ordered 2 for my friends daughters. 1 out of the 2 was damaged so we had to return it. Unfortunately the replacement also arrived damaged. The damages were either cracked glass, missing solar panel or a lid that doesn't work - take your pick!
I really love the product as I say its a glow not a night light to read a book by and we are looking forward to taking ours camping in a couple of weeks.
So yes I would recommend this product but make sure you check it properly for faults. For the record - Amazon have a great replacement/refund policy so I would definately recommend buying from them.

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing   June 13, 2010

Mine is not very bright and when it does glow, it only glows for about 1-2 hours. Certainly not that lovely glowing campfire type look on the packaging and promo photos.

4 out of 5 stars So far, so good....   June 3, 2010

The product is much sturdier than it looks in the illustration and really does look weatherproof. I followed advice given elsewhere in these reviews and flipped the lid up, making sure the jar was switched off before it charged up in strong early summer sun. It lit up as soon as it was moved into an unlit room at twilight and stayed lit - I switched it off after two hours.
The on /off switch is very flimsy and a bit fiddly, which is a shame given that the rest of the jar is so well made. These would be lovely placed in groups, but not exactly cheap. The blue glow from the jar (if you buy a blue one) is ethereal and very atmospheric.
Worth the money? Well, for what it is - a solar light - it was expensive, but it is well made and a nice little conversation piece.
